This is a problem?
I’m not aware of anyone shaming or opposing their natural hair. My girl has a weave because, according to her, it’s easier to maintain, not because anyone else cares what she does with her hair. And she told me that most “black” women’s braids are not their natural hair.
As a “white” man, I can’t even tell the difference until I run my fingers through her hair. She laughed at me for thinking her hair was her natural hair. I thought she probably just put a lot of time into it.
What is this woman talking about?

This is definitely a real thing. Many young black children, beginning at a very young age (through toys, dolls and books modeled after characters with straight long hair) associate straight hair as “good” hair. And their own “curly” “kinky” hair as bad.

Could it be that these women just doing different things with their hair. My wife’s hair is a different color and length every few months. Her nails change, she has several different pairs of contacts, her makeup is different from time to time. Stop framing everything as insecurities about someone’s skin color or race. It’s getting really old.

i think the part your perspective leaves out is cultural context. there is significant meaning in wearing one’s natural hair for black women, because there have been decades upon decades of discrimination against them, especially in primarily white workplaces, for wearing the hair that grows out of their scalp, without being straightening mechanically or chemically.
the violence and shaming imparted against black people (just for wearing their hair long, untreated, and uncovered), has resulted in massive grief and shame for many.
for many black women, to wear one’s natural hair is to stand firmly in one’s own power and to feel confident in one’s self.
it may not be meaningful to you, but it is meaningful to this community.

@lem I would be curious how often someone is told to straighten their hair in a workplace. Obviously most places will want you to be groomed to some extent but as far as telling someone they must straighten their hair because of their skin color, I’m highly doubting that happens. Especially today. That’s an HR nightmare and a lawsuit waiting to happen. You should wear your hair the way you like it. And I think most do. Claiming women are straightening their hair and coloring it because of historical racism is a stretch. It has to get tiresome if your a black person constantly being told everything and everyone is racist and your whole life is a product of some very ignorant people more than 60 years ago.

Dimaz

@Kimberly F it’s a hair type, so 4C is one of the curly types where each hair strand is tightly coiled and delicate

🎉 Is this the main problem now? A lot of Americans need a good salary and good health insurance, but instead the US sponsors the killing of people in Ukraine. It’s time to stop Biden from stealing money from the Ukraine crisis.

But what if one doesn’t like the natural look? Doesn’t mean that they’re trying to hide the natural look because they’ve been taught isn’t beautiful. It just means they don’t like it and want a look for themselves that they like. Stop trying to take away people’s individuality or trying to teach them they’ve somehow been taught something wrong.

some people may feel like this but if we talk in general, it’s really empowering to see the natural looks since many places want people to look in a certain way, at some point it discourages people to love their own natural look.

As a man, I do appreciate natural hair and healthy practices. But I don’t appreciate the need for a stage to proclaim it. I am beginning to believe females do nothing and can do nothing alone without announcing it socially.

I have always felt that black women hated their hair.
And I personally have always hated all the fake crap. Like yhe fake long braids and wigs with obviously non “black poeple” type hair.
Then I hear the men complain (jokingly) about NEVER being able to touch the hair and never being able to go for a dip in the pool (spontaneously)….. what a way to live.

I am often SO jealous of beautiful black girl hair!! I remember younger me thinking it was like magic because it could be styled in so many gorgeous and fun ways—the afro remains my absolute fave and the bigger the better 😍😍😍

I mean I’m all for natural hair, reducing negative imagery, and letting people do whatever they want with their hair..
But did you just imply that braids and locks are natural? Does black hair braid itself without my knowledge or am I misunderstanding what that is?

No, this is better: Hey, Ginny, I know you must be lonely, but getting your kicks out of being socially inappropriate with strangers is not the answer.

This is so true! That said, being professional isn’t about you, it’s being part of a team. Since the company is the priority, you would dress in whatever way which enhances the performance of your teammates. For an extreme example, wearing just a thong the work would be distracting to others. On a micro level, minimizing your hair might be less distracting to your coworkers. A more successful and happy life is selfless one.
