It’s a wonderful improvement for people suffering from neurological diseases that impair communication. The fact that it takes practice suggests this technology is less likely to be abused in its current state.

Wow this is real progress for humanity but what can we do alas this will be only for those ultra high rich ones who make a top 1% of the world population, our broken system made healthcare a capitalists profit making luxury commodity rather than the necessity it is.

I worked on a lab developing open source prosthetic and orthesic enhancements for people with disabilities. I’m ready to bet that a cheap, open source alternative of this technology will be available in the near future, just like it happened with our projects. Just give it a couple more years.

Unless you suffer from a condition that deprives you from being able to type, such as ALS, you shouldn’t be needing this anyways. This device is being presented as a prosthetic, not a mass-produced vanity. Hopefully none of us will need one in the future.

People, I get that TED talks have been quite unsubstantial as of late, but this man right here is presenting us with a tool to help disabled people communicate after losing their ability to do so. This is not a debatable topic, this is an objectively good thing that is happening in the world right now. A net positive for humanity.
How about we learn to have an opinion on each subject matter separately instead of being so generalistic in our judgement of these talks? It’s fine to dislike the format, the channel, the presentation… But disliking a topic related to helping other humans might be quite biased or outright misanthropic.

Is this a roast towards people with physical impairment, a misinformed, seriously sarcastic comment on the perceived uselessness of the product for people it’s not intended for to begin with, or just a very poorly made joke?

Hi, I study neuroscience. Reading the brain is fairly simple, just find the right area of the brain hook up some electrodes and you’re done, (the surgery is really complex but the principle is not)
The way neurons fire, is more complex then just a charge flowing though. It’s a chemical reaction which causes gates to open and close which let’s some current through, if you could open and control some of these gates, yes you could have some version of mind control. But that would either need many microscopic electronic pulses to control just the right areas, or just a drug.
So no, but a similar surgery would be required.

@L.C I was thinking of the future, as in 20 years from now. It’s not a stretch to think if information can flow in one direction, it can flow in the opposite or another direction. Even social media companies hire psychologists to know how to manipulate and influence people through advertising and their platforms in order to get people to consumer/patronize paying customers or be influenced by what the customer wants, like political candidates, corporations or individuals that might have an agenda and money. To that end, once devices like these become commonplace and more developed, I could see them being used for other purposes. I mean, look at cell phones. It’s not just about making calls anymore.

The video showcases exactly what the title says, what is your point?
Andrej Telle
October 27, 2022 at 3:20 pm
@Rokaq it is an interface to type. Like a keyboard or a pen. There is no turning thoughts into text in either of them.
Rokaq
October 27, 2022 at 6:03 pm
@Andrej Telle Well then, what did you expect? A full-on self-writing novel maker based on the loose bits of information roaming around carelessly inside your head? That’s a bit detached from the current state of the art. Plus, what is currently being done by the machine is precisely what is stated in the title: a brain implant is being showcased, and said implant is capable of interpreting your thoughts to the extent that current technology allows and converts those same thoughts into written text. Say, you can think of a sentence in a letter-by-letter basis and the machine will produce said sentence to you. It’s a novel way of writing aided by a brain implant with no physical input that quite literally takes your thoughts and turns them into written text, titled in in the most direct way possible.
What sort of clickbait is here?

TED talks have declined in quality recently, but mate, this video is actually very good. One would say it’s a golden nugget laying on a pile of dirt, the idea is genuinely awesome and the product does work. It’s even presented as a tool for people with disabilities to overcome their limitations while a cure is in development, it’s just a good thing being shown to us.

Couple of thoughts here, and correct me if I am mistaken. First, if you dont have light speed internet access, this will be about as useless as have a ring of hair around the nipples. Second, who dictates the software and addendum to software upgrades? Where do you draw the line at the subjects person thoughts, and the programmers digital property?

This is a closed system, apparently, so no internet connection should be necessary if you wish to just write plain text on a document. Of course it would be needed for apps such as Twitter or WhatsApp, but that’s a given if you plan on using them anyways. Second, I’m not sure whether you refer to intellectual property over the user’s written messages, copyright over them or the technology’s rights itself. Could you phrase your second question differently?

Devices can be implanted
Nemo X
October 27, 2022 at 2:44 am
The issue is that all these devices use just a handful of sensors, which is utterly inadequate, in this case quantity is quality. Try and know a book by reading 10 letters!
Rokaq
October 27, 2022 at 2:11 pm
Apparently it works, and their solution isn’t half-bad. More sensors would probably be redundant and unnecessarily increase the price, but who are we to discuss this? We barely know anything about the device or how it works, this is but a presentation and I’m yet to find an online datasheet detailing every detail of the machine itself.
Regardless, I’m a robotics engineer myself and I can assure you that the amount of sensors isn’t quite as important as the use you give them. Properly processed and interpreted data is a very powerful tool, even if you only have a handful of feedback data samples. For instance, you can implement very good safeguards in a system that uses a motor without the need to add anything more than an ohmmeter, since a DC motor that isn’t properly working due to excessive friction, resistance on the rotors or has some damaged parts will inevitable leave a trace on the electrical current that feeds its rotation, and thus the readings of an ohmmeter can be used to discern when a potential malfunction is happening and subsequently stop the motor before it damages itself or any nearby operators.
TL;DR: Retrieving data is important, but interpreting said data is even more so.

“The Overlords” would make for a nice D&D boss, not gonna lie.
However, someone needs to take you back to ground level, fella. There are no overlords, only rich people. And as much as they might hate to admit it, they are undoubtedly people, as ephemereal and dumb ad you and me, equally prone to error and stupidness. They just happen to have their pockest stacked, and sadly the world revolves around those very same pockets. Whatever your (most certainly) unfounded fears are, you definitely need not care much for them.
