The Future Will Be Shaped by Optimists | Kevin Kelly | TED
“Every great and difficult thing has required a strong sense of optimism,” says editor and author Kevin Kelly, who believes that we have a moral obligation to be optimistic. Tracing humanity’s progress throughout history, he’s observed that a positive outlook helps us solve problems and empowers us to forge a path forward. In this illuminating…

Building trust in crypto with Jonathan Levin of Chainalysis | Equity Podcast
Late last week, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission chair Gary Gensler said that he was “proud to serve” the agency, which some are taking as a hint at an upcoming resignation. April 22, 2022 at 4:32 pm
@Tyler First, thank you for your comment. The answer to your first question is that we do not know how many philosophical problems have stopped the future from being shaped. I am in no way disparaging Elon Musk’s to build Robot Optimus. I am simply noting that Robot Optimus will not have true artificial intelligence. The philosophical problem that I cited surrounds a very common but completely mistaken belief that human beings are mere receivers of knowledge that we perceive in the environment provided by our sense organs. Human beings are universal explainers and constructors. Our minds are universal simulators. We are quite unlike robots. We create new knowledge “on the fly”. I believe that true AI is possible. However, a machine that thinks has not yet been built. As far as is known, we are the only animals that can create new knowledge. Building a true AI takes a better philosophical understanding of the nature of a human being.
Tyler
April 22, 2022 at 4:39 pm
@Pat Moran hey happy to have a normal conversation! Thanks for taking the time!
Yeah I mostly meant it as a funny comment cause the name is close to optimism, however I didn’t mean to say that it’s agi. It’s simply that solving computer vision and machine learning of real world environment is just on the horizon now so humanoid robots will be a part of the current industrial revolution and going forward will shape parts of our future. I absolutely agree that it is very concerning for us as humans. Technology is a double edged sword and I think in many ways it harms us more than it seems to help, but at this point we have to make the best of it.
Pat Moran
April 22, 2022 at 5:35 pm
@Tyler I am relatively certain that Elon Musk called the robot by the name of “Robot Optimus” when being interviewed about the opening of his new factory in Austin Texas last week. And, I wanted to make sure that you knew that I did not mean that I was in any way scared or terrified or troubled by a machine that thinks.. On the contrary, I would be absolutely thrilled. When it is discovered how to program human creativity, a whole new world or even worlds will be opened up for research and study. It might be the greatest advance in science since Darwin.
Tyler
April 22, 2022 at 6:16 pm
@Pat Moran tbh I’m pretty nervous about agi, but Optimus and humanoid robots won’t necessarily be agi they’ll just have decent real world comprehension to do human tasks and the rate of improvement will probably be a lot faster than we can imagine.
Pat Moran

You can tell he’s trying so hard but he’s out of touch. He’s not flat out wrong but he’s seeing things through a fixed perspective and not about how literally we will always face some form of inequities because that’s an unfortunate constant we need to fight rather than ignore. But, we’re NEVER going to get to this “perfect place” because for everyone to be exactly the same and agree with eachother that would be quite literally be 1 person in a room alone. Even then there would be a problem! Even if you would love to be alone, and you’d be the minority here, you would still need someone in your life to serve some purpose. People still need doctors, people still need therapists, people still need assistance, people should not be expected to be specialists in everything so again, we have to all live together! But, because some people don’t think food service is a respectable job even though it is a necessary one. Just because they’re not holding your money doesn’t mean that there any less important than a bank! They feed you! To be honest restaurants do more for Americans and Banks do! But that’s the thing! When we rely on the concept of the good old days in order to look at the future we are completely dismissing the present that’s going on. Right now, we are in some serious bad times. We obviously need optimism but at the same time things are not good right now! And we need to focus on that! We need that to actually drive us to band together to actually tackle the problems at hand so we can get back to being optimistic! But! Unless are some major changes in this country, and I am legitimately saying 180° turn changes. We are not making it.

It is is particularly important for people to understand that religions are a predominant source of pessimism. Anything that claims “perfection” or “ultimate truth” closes or destroys the ability to correct errors. Error correction always reveals new problems. Religions encourage the re-interpretation that problems will “never” be solved.

I suspect this well-done presentation was based on Mr. Kelly’s familiarity with some of the writings. of Karl Popper. I believe that Popper is responsible for the best Philosophy of Science so far. His contributions to the field are not yet fully appreciated. in my opinion. Unfortunately, the 300 year old Philosophy of Empiricism is still accepted as “common sense.” by many philosophers and even scientists. Empiricism resembles religions and is seriously flawed. On the other hand, Popper’s Philosophy of Realism is based on the values of the Enlightenment that claim the reality of the world can be explained and that it is desirable to do so.

Buy companies that are PROFITABLE, very important irrespective of sector. 4. Debt to equity ratio is less than 30% 5. Pat Moran
April 22, 2022 at 3:05 pm
The future depends on what we think and do now. We do not know the specifics though. If we did we would be working to create more problems because of the that solution. However, mere meditation (indistinguishable from nonspecific prayer) does not get us one jot closer to problem-solving and problem creating action. Mere contemplation is not enough.

Logic and empiricism is the basis for this Ted Talk. There is another component that makes an optimistic future viable and real – “accountability.” This is one quality sadly missing in our current culture. Our ancestors were forced to make generational sacrifices (think depression and world wars). Our current culture demands one’s needs are paramount over the needs of the greater whole only to create true narcissist and a denigrating culture of rot. There is hope with awareness, personal accountability and… to give back more than we take.

The future will be shaped by people that find succes and impact despite obvious shortcomings, downsides etc. These are people that understand the difficulties and disrupt industries knowing there is a long challenging road ahead. They find the right path by relentless pursuit and trial and error. I believe these disruptive people CANNOT be called optimists, an optimist hopes that everything is going to turn out right, a pessimist looks at things and sees that there is a good chance something is not going to work, so says it will likely not.
If you want to make real change, know that it is not easy, and will likely not happen the first time.
But keep pursuing your path to what you consider succes. Through trial and error you will persevere.
Good Luck.

I’m irrevocably optimistic. But Kelly is way out of touch with the uniquely precarious position we humans face at this point in history. Climate change is of course our primary challenge, but the increasing number of hurdles in front of this primary challenge is growing insurmountable, starting with tech-driven polarization and the imminent redundancy of humans with AI. As the earth’s sixth mass extinction is happening in ten minutes, we need democracy and consensus yesterday (or at least an authoritarian government that wants to save the human race). This guy seems to be enjoying his final morphine dose; his philosophy is wonderful but outdated and barely helpful now.

When the brain loses a faculty, say the ability to hear people’s voices, it is faced with a problem. Often the brain quickly goes about rewiring itself in such a way that allows for lips to be read efficiently. This rewiring requires facing the problem, facing the initial embarrassment of staring at people’s lips and struggling to learn the subtilities of minor micro-movements that may mean many different things, misinterpretation and failure are rife. The problem is only solved when the problem is faced when the lips are monitored with state-of-the-art attention and intention. In the same way there are many problems for everyday people of which the solution is facing us down, its right under our noses. Do we choose to see the problem clearly, without fear, and seek to solve it, or do we decide to cover our eyes as well as our ears and live in a dark quiet world

Majority of ppl think there is a choice against the cabals running our world but when you see history just repeating then you know that no one can change the future for the better as long the power belongs to the elites. Power has to be shared with the other 99% of the worlds population. My optimism just making me expandable for the leaders.

Optimism – solutions create problems burning a trillion litres of fossil fuels creates problems, making billions of tonnes of disposable plastic and it ending up in the ocean problems, lets hope future generations are wiser and economies will not create more moronic and predictible problems.

This talk was so impressive. Solutions and problems are like a consecutive chain. If we are optimists, we gonna try to find out solutions autonomously. However, if we are pessimists, I think we gonna be good at finding out problems.
Needless to say, being optimist is a better option for our life!!!

Every time I watch this channel it gets worse. The talks have devolved from science, technology, engineering and education to spiritual mumbo jumbo, new age nonsense and psychological smoke.
No, optimism does not shape our future. If it did then failed inventions and products that didn’t catch on would not exist. An optimist would chipperly wear google glass, a pessimist would laugh and toss it aside.
Being a pessimist is just as important as being an optimist. Pessimism helps sober us for reality and its very real problems. Don’t get me wrong; pessimism can be detrimental, but so can optimism. It’s just as easy to overestimate your own powers and abilities, and fail at solving a problem as it is to pessimistically give up on it. We need to be balanced with equal measure in both in order to live and survive in this uncertain world.

Yah sure all those optimists are always capitalists, who are inclined to destroy the world or Who are causing all these social problems in the first place. I’m unsubscribing to TED. They posting trash lately.
