Professional drummer and educator Larnell Lewis explains drumming in 13 levels of difficulty, from easy to complex. The Snarky Puppy percussionist explains how drum techniques build upon each other as the easiest levels incorporate the hi-hat, bass and snare drums, and more difficult levels include polyrhythms, the floor tom, ride cymbals, syncopation and much more.

Now, this is a very useful and cool video about drumming!. Man! It was awesome, I’m a drummer myself, and this video may be used perfectly as an introduction for someone who is interested to learn about drumming, this video shows a global view of drumming in a way that is easy, entertaining, accurate and very didactic… Larnell, you are a true educator and an awesome musician!

Back in the 1940s, jazz pianist Art Tatum used to play for friends after the club closed, and I would have loved to just sit and listen to him groove. I now feel that way about Larnell Lewis.

Exceptional. The editing was as flawless and helpful as Larnell’s drumming. As a self-taught drummer who has a lot of holes in my knowledge (can play some advanced fills but struggle sometimes with limb independence or maintaining polyrhythms) , I am definitely going to be coming back to this.

Nice, i would add on the first levels, the way the haptic feedback feels on the bouncing with the drums or cymbals, your wrist really gets to know the feel and you can make repetitive strikes more easily. For me, it marks an insane difference when playing with sticks because i play with brushes.

Few years back, Larnell Lewis came and gave a workshop in dubai, UAE. His Explanations were lucid and clear, he went over ever thing he was teaching so many times, and also how he learnt things. It was so inspiring. I didn’t know who he was at that time, but he left me with an impression which i’ve kept in my head for so long now. I talked to him and he just seemed like a really nice and down to earth person.

Larnell is one of the best drummers I’ve seen in years. And the fact that he actually knows how to teach what he knows in a clear, concise way… as well as being a player at such a high level… is an extremely rare combination. I’ve met so many great musicians who barely know how to have a two-way conversation with an average human being, let alone teach their art.

I think perhaps the single most helpful drum lesson I ever had was when Dennis Chambers explained how to play in the pocket. And it wasn’t even because of the pocket. He made the point that, as long as you feel the underlying beat in your core like it’s your own heartbeat, and keep the primary drum strikes on those beats… you can embellish and improvise pretty much whatever you want around it and it’ll sound okay. Sprinkle on as much flavor as you want, but it’s gotta have a solid core.

I don’t even know how to start. “Meet” Larnell by YT suggestions on the “Enter Sandman” video and was hook up. Even not being a drummer (not enough coordination), I love everything around this instrument. And seeing Larnell explaining/teaching/sharing his love of it, it’s just amazing! Video editing is also extremely on point, making SO EASY to “see” what he just explaining with captions over the drum kit, that’s perfect!

I love this teaching video and enjoyed playing on my table and in the air with the syncopation section and the right paradiddles section around the drums, respectively. I also loved air drumming with what looked liked doubles around the drumset which I air drummed. I loved following you and imitating your movements, Larnell Lewis.
Additionally, I loved the fact that you utilized I think change your mind song to implement/ demonstrate your teaching through this great video!!!!!!????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????.

I have a question regarding this part of the video: 14:27 – 14:45, Is all these movements here and there just random, or is there a consistent way in replicating what Larnell is playing right there?

Thank you for this explanation. it is a blessing to have musicians like you. I think you should do another video explaining when to apply fills, especially chops. A lot of the younger drummers today spend more time learning chops and it is hard for them to hold a groove, because of the thirst for chops. It is even worse in modern gospel music because every modern gospel drummer sounds the same because they all play chops. Learning chops is good because it helps you grow your dynamics but it sounds better when it is applied at the right time.

What a beautifully arranged kit. I love the selection of cymbals (i hate how my china sounds, def stacking with a slotted crash and a riveted 12” splash sammiched) and that hybrid snare with a depth in between the snare and floor Tom ooweee mama im def coppin. Only thing lacking in my humble opinion is a clap slack, its basically a hi hat the way i express myself lol

As a teacher of mathematics myself and a drum enthousiast (not as a player, just hearing) I have to say this is MASTER TEACHING! I have heard years and years of Mike Portnoy, Mike Mangini and so many other highly accomplished drummers (in my favorite Progressive rock/metal genre), but I was always following my ear… Now I got to understand some fundamentals like never before! Excellent teaching, BRAVO!

It also reminds me a lot of the @samuraiguitarist video on 7 levels of guitar chords (power chords to jazz lord) and how you start out trying to impress girls but after level 4 you end up mostly appealing to other musicians 😂.
