This speaker took on gerrymandering in her state — and won! #TEDTalks

You don’t need political power to make real change, says activist Katie Fahey. She tells the story of how she led a successful movement in Michigan to end gerrymandering — the practice of drawing district lines to favor one political party — and how it all started with a simple social media post.

@SharonGibson-g7d Gerrymandering seems to only help people who are in power stay in power. That is antithetical to the way the U.S is supposed to operate. If you can’t maintain power without giving yourself an unfair advantage, you should hold no office in the United States of America.

Gerrymandering is anti-democractic and anti-American. It goes against the will of the people. If your government doesn’t represent the will of the people it isn’t good enough for American citizens. It should be opposed by all people of all parties in all situations everywhere. It only befits those in power to take power away from the people and is fundamentally against the ideas of our country.

I have something that keeps me up at night, that makes me feel like “man I really wish I could change the ENTIRE GOVERNMENT”. That’s not exactly something one can take on unfortunately, especially not just a middle age maintenance tech from rural New Mexico🤦🏼‍♂️

Hope she takes on getting STAR Voting available to voters next. Fixing gerrymandering and implementing STAR voting are the two best things we can do to effect long term systemic change.

One month before the Rio Olympics, runner Alexi Pappas couldn’t hit her splits in practice. She was begging her watch to change its mind. Then her coach told her to take it off — and shared the best advice she’s ever received. That single piece of wisdom led her to break a national record and changed how she chases her goals, carrying her through ultramarathons, a memoir and three films. Bad days aren’t a detour, she says — they mean you’re right on track.
