Sometimes the power of citizens… if Jim Crow laws exist … it was democracy. Democracy started with slaves but at least there was variations to prevent slavery way later.
Just for example.

What does working together have to do with Democracy? They are not one and the same. And pretty much Democracy is used as a catch phrase with no meaning or as a rallying call for people that don;t know better.
Straight Democracies do not work because the will of the majority is not always the best thing and usually isn’t. The US is not a “Democracy” although it has Democratic principals.
And because liberals think all conservatives and white people are racist nazis…just how do you think the majority would have voted during abolition? Or what happens if the majority votes itself and only itself into a very nice basic income without work?
Stop thinking the masses are intelligent enough or aware enough of the intricacies of global and local events to make sound decisions. Because they are not.

Democracy is bullshit. It’s mob rule. It ensures that anybody who can create the illusion of being the majority has no constraints on its actions. It’s why the Greek city-states were always at war with one another. It’s why Democrats in the Southern states managed to keep black Americans so horribly repressed for so long. The Constitution prohibited the abuses that Democrats practiced on black people, but that vocal and violent minority bullied all others so effectively that a bigoted minority gave the illusion of being a majority and used “democracy” to keep black Americans in servitude. Democrats should be ashamed of themselves, and Americans should understand that we have a republic, not a democracy.

Alexander’s shift from treating people as consumers to treating them as citizens is the useful bit here. British politics often invites participation only after the menu has been written, priced and laminated — rather like being asked to choose the biscuits after someone else has chosen the meeting. A book I read called The Hollow State explores the same gap between democratic ceremony and practical public control. Which institutions could hand citizens real power without simply creating another consultation exercise?
