Stocks have been volatile in recent weeks, notching their worst start to the year since 1939. Between the war in Ukraine, decades-high inflation and recession fears, it’s been difficult for investors to convince themselves to put more money into the market. But with Mr Chris right now, I am ready to move ASAP

David Sacks, chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science & Technology, says Anthropic and OpenAI should slow development of their most advanced AI models if they believe the technology poses serious risks, but argues they don’t need new regulation to do it. He pushes back against calls for antitrust exemptions and a broader regulatory framework, saying today’s frontier AI labs are setting the frontier themselves and do not need “anyone else’s permission.” He also underlines that any approach must account for competition with China, which is unlikely to join a global agreement to slow down AI development. He speaks to Bloomberg’s Ed Ludlow.

Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez is pushing back on proposals for the biggest frontier AI labs to coordinate on safety standards, warning that such an approach could entrench dominant players and amount to a “cartel.” Gomez argues that tougher safeguards, independent testing and greater transparency are needed, but says the rules should be shaped by a broader group of stakeholders rather than companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI alone. He joins Ed Ludlow on “Bloomberg Tech.”
