   10:47 what that commenter was calling “gentle parenting” is actually “permissive parenting” or “lazy parenting.” Really “gentle parenting” is “authoritative parenting,” (NOT authoritarian. Those are VERY different) which produces the best results.

   I don’t have kids and I don’t ever want to, but this video and others like it are very valuable to me because I can look back on how I was raised and get an insight into how I got all the wrong lessons- and try and parent myself the way I should’ve been

   Conflating understanding with agreement and separating those two things was one of the most powerful adult lessons I had to learn. Eventually you encounter people who will know what you mean and they still haven’t changed their position.

    My little cousin (6yrs old) had tamtrums in public and private that ended in her on the floor screaming until my aunt did or gave her what she wanted. Once I took her to the mall (i was already a young adult) and she wanted icecream before the bookstore (the reason we went in the first place) she screamed and threw herself on the floor, i just looked at her and said “i am not your mother” and walked away. 2 seconds later she was holding my hand and asking if we could go to get icecream after we saw books. She never ever did that to me again. And kept on doing it to her mother. And yes we went and got ice cream.

    I feel like kids are like foreigners to a country. We take for granted their are a lot of social things that no one says but most just accept. Kids (and foreigners with a completely different culture) dont understand these differences, so they might do something that we see as “acting out” but its really a natural response to a situation that we just do because we are conditioned to do so. Like I understand “doesnt want to do something” cause a lot of times I dont want to do something, but I do it because I “have to” and it can be hard to explain that.

    Why is there no third option in this scenario? When I was growing up, tantrums were rewarded with corporal punishment. And look how well-adjusted my generation (mostly) turned out. 😜

    I remember one time having a conversation with my mother when my middle child was… hmm… 2-3 years old… where she told me I was bribing my child and then laughed at me when I said, “It’s not a bribe, it’s an incentive.” Because what I was doing was NOT “here’s some candy, now be quiet,” but rather it was, “Hey, if you can be a little more quiet, you can have some candy.” Appropriate behavior before reward rather than reward IN HOPES of getting appropriate behavior.
