The iPhone’s virtual assistant got a glow-up with iOS 27 and finally lives up to Apple’s 2011 promise. In my early testing, Siri is just here to get things done.

I like Siri ai. I’m using it on my 16e.

We are on vacation and before we went I asked Siri Ai how long it would take to get to our destination with and without tolls…. and it did amazing shows both in menu with time, short explanation, and a button to start directions for both! 👏🏾👏🏾

I don’t care how much it is improved, I will not have it on my iPhone, iPad or Mac and will not be using its rivals too… no data centres!!! 🏴
@pmbrig

Apple has configured Siri AI to do the bulk of its work on-device. It only uses cloud AI when it has to, and that is through a sandboxed partition that keeps your data away from Google. Apple is betting that this will be the model in the future; if so then it will significantly undercut the need for large data centers.

Gmail app is not officially supported, but if you add your Gmail account to the Apple Mail app, Siri can access it ….

the google calendar / whatsapp bit is fair, but beta code already has an extensions framework so siri can route to claude/gemini/chatgpt, not just third parties opting their data in. apple just didnt talk about it at wwdc tbh

Siri is Google Gemini, the reason some questions take a few seconds is it’s going to the cloud and sending your private data to… who knows?
@suswars-r8j
July 21, 2026 at 5:53 pm
@hackberry4009it’s not actually. Apple used Gemini tech to train its own model.

July 20, 2026 at 12:49 pm
I’m really liking Siri AI and am very impressed. I’m so glad Apple used a Gemini top foundation model to train their own models and are not actually using Gemini as the brains! Apple doesn’t collect data from their users the way OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, and Google do. So they needed to do this.
It will get better, too, being in early beta.
@SAMSONICSCOMP
July 21, 2026 at 3:26 am
Saying Apple doesn’t collect user data is delusional. Which tech companies avoid collecting user data to improve their products? Are you sure Apple isn’t using Google Gemini technology for its AI?
They said it clearly on their presentation that their ai is built on gemini and quickly move on in order to cover their inadequacy.
@alexanderfazel
July 21, 2026 at 1:23 pm
@SAMSONICSCOMPI said they don’t collect the way the other companies do. Of course Apple collects data and needs to be kept in check.
At least developers and security researchers can vet any part of the PCC process through Google servers and Nvidia chips.

If this is what you like, just buy a Pixel. This is a pale imitation with nice animation.
@fuzziestlumpkin
July 21, 2026 at 6:11 am
But what if you want a phone where the buttons won’t fall off after 6 months?
@starrekip
July 21, 2026 at 7:42 am
@fuzziestlumpkinOr a phone with battery problems. Exactly that. No iPhone for me.
@fuzziestlumpkin
July 21, 2026 at 8:02 am
@starrekip honestly, I’d take an iPhone battery over a pixel battery any day of the week. I don’t remember the last time an iPhone was recalled over battery safety issues, whereas I can think of two that have personally affected family members of mine with pixels
@starrekip
July 21, 2026 at 8:14 am
@fuzziestlumpkinThat’s annoying. There was indeed a problem with the buttons on a Pixel 7. A number of users experienced this. This was in 2022. However, just search for iPhone Battery problems and you will see how big the problem is. The fact that you haven’t had any issues is not a good indicator.

Siri Ai is still totally idiotic. Yes, it can know surprising things at time. But in incorrectly answers almost all questions. For example “show pictures of me in Guatemala”. “i can’t find a contact named me” How do you say “preterite perfect” in French? Playing “Perfect by Ed Sheeran. “ What apps do I have regarding weather” I cannot find any weather apps. I recommend downloading Apple’s weather app.
I’ve got an iPhone 17 pro, and am definitely using the new Siri. It does very well if the thing I’m talking about can be answered by Gemini. Not much improvement in helping my use my phone.

When Microsoft introduced Copilot PC’s ability to track everything you do on your laptop, everyone raised privacy concerns. But when Apple, with help from Google’s Gemini, did something similar, people called it revolutionary. Lmao.
@fuzziestlumpkin
July 21, 2026 at 6:06 am
People have more trust in Apple than Microsoft. When you compare the current MS GDID scandal to Apple historically telling govt agencies to shove it, it’s a hard position to argue against.
@mpk927
July 21, 2026 at 7:26 am
Microsoft has a very sketchy past with security. Apple doesn’t, it’s actually quite secure. Hence

Most of this could be accomplished by using voice search on the Google search widget which has been available for years. I don’t get what makes siri so special aside from looking in your calendar or email. 🤷♂️
