NASA and SpaceX successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from the historic Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Orbiting Observatory was named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, Nancy Grace Roman and can produce images from deep space 100 times larger than NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

Amazing. Heard a long podcast with the director of the RST program, decades of incredible work through the COVID era . I can’t imagine how happy and relieved they are that it was a prefect launch. Hope for smooth sailing and great science to come. Now the real fun begins. Congrats to everyone.

You’d be very surprised and industrial electrical, I have worked with some zip ties. I can take hundreds of pounds of weight totally insane. 😂 ones UV proof, others rated so they are X RAY proof lots of weird stuff lol 😂 then there’s super cheap ones that snap if you look at them

Wait, at the 9:24 min/sec mark here, Roman detached from stage 2’s rocket at a speed 36,479km/hr. But escape velocity from earth is 40,270km/hr. THEN it began to slow down from there! How did Roman get to escape velocity — onboard thrusters? After de acceleration? Why not get to escape velocity first, head to L2, THEN detach? Best to crash Stage 2 back on earth, out of the way, thrust Roman to L2 with its own thrusters? Just seemed like Stage Two could have got much closer to escape velocity, saving Roman thruster fuel. What am I missing? Thanks.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope did not reach escape velocity, because it is not intended to escape Earth’s gravity entirely.Instead, the telescope was launched by a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket into a high-energy transfer trajectory. This trajectory allows it to travel about 1 million miles away to the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2).Because it is entering a permanent halo orbit at L2—where the gravitational forces of the Sun and Earth balance out—it remains bound to the Earth-Sun system. True escape velocity would mean breaking away from Earth’s gravity completely to enter an independent heliocentric (solar) orbit, which is not required for its mission.
You missed that they know what they’re doing and it’s going as planned.
