    One annoying thing people tend to do is compress hundreds of years (or thousands, in the case of ancient Egypt) and different areas into a single culture.

    There are definite commonalities and continuing of some practices, but it would be like assuming that everything done in medieval or Victorian era England is done in current Scotland.
