Great episode! Learned a lot of new things, and that’s not a light statement, as I’m a former wilderness firefighter. More of this please.
I think that the question about the “largest living organism” was about the mushroom that’s virtually an island itself. The largest living organism on Earth is a fungus. Known as the “Humongous Fungus” (Armillaria ostoyae), a single individual in Oregon’s Malheur National Forest covers about 2,385 acres (nearly (3.5) square miles). Most of it lives underground as a massive network of thread-like cells called mycelium.

An under appreciated and vital profession. We’re going to need a lot of foresters to clean up all the messes that corporations are creating. As usual they won’t have to pay for all the negative externalities they create because capitalism. We’ll all have to foot the bill because we can’t hurt the almighty bottom line.

At the Lesesne state forest in Virginia, there are efforts to immunize the American chestnut by breeding it with the fungal resistant Chinese chestnut. They must go through many generations to make the American chestnut genetically dominant. 1:20, I think. If anyone’s ever in the area, check it out. I swear, misinformation will be the death of us all. Thank you Wired for these continuing series because it sparks its own seeds of growth for those of us who want to read more about these subjects. Please, more videos on the natural world. The earth is a giant ecosystem and our very existence depends on it thriving. It’s humans that need to co-exist with the planet not the other way around.

Is it just me, or were more of the questions in this Support video asked in a rude or crude manner than most videos? Is there something about forests that makes people swear and act stupid? (thinking pine forests smelling of air freshener and clear cut logging being good for fire prevention)

  105. @OrcOfOrchestra

    July 23, 2026 at 3:14 pm

Hemp would be a way better solution, we can easily plant it.. well almost anywhere. Maybe on islands that can no longer be reforested, or Farmers that are tired of growing soy beans and corn. I understand that there’s a need for paper, fuel, wood, etc. but hemp would solve a lot of those problems. Even fuel. If we stopped using fossil fuels and focused on renewable energy; solar, wind, nuclear, hemp based or or corn based ethanol; our whole entire world ecosystem would be fixed within a thousand years. That’s 10 generations.
