The miserable truth is too many Americans are too stupid or too spoiled to do what is nessesary to save our freedoms. Lol it sounded like she was hopeful for American democracy, but it seems like all of the signs of developing autocracy are being shown in the US. The thing is I think everybody is thinking that Trump will be the dictator if anybody, but I think it’s the opposite. He’s so unpopular and incompetent that he actually will get voted out, but he’s setup the next person who gets in charge to take the reigns and complete the process of concentrating basically all governmental power in the executive branch.

If Democracy is free and fair elections where the citizens elect the leaders of their choice then the answer is its already dead it died in November 2024 . 81 million people voted for Biden in 2020 because they believed Trump was a threat to Democracy . I am suppose to believe that out of 81 million only 75 million showed up after Jan 6 ,New York courts convicted 34 times Colorado courts found Trump planned and participated in an insurrection against the United States the Colorado Supreme Court upheld that finding courts in DC and Georgia found enough probable cause to indict for election interference ( Georgia )and stealing classified documents (DC) and project 2025 was published in a book a year before the election and 6 million people decided he was not a threat and maybe even voted for him . The odds of losing one election by 7 million votes

You neglected to mention that Pinochet ousted Allende with the help of the US CIA.
Also, the usual American exceptionalism that creeps in even when the US meets every requirement for a dying democracy. “Yes, this is happening, but we’re special so it won’t happen here.”
Problem is that many of the changes Trump and the Republicans have brought in started with Reagan in the 1980s. This isn’t the start – this is the endgame and many of these changes will be hard to fix when the only political opposition – the Democrats – have shown themselves to be almost as bad as the Republicans when they do act and a disorganised herd of cats when they don’t.
So, good luck with that.

Throughout our history America has completed several cycles with each one lasting about one long individual lifetime (~80-100 years) composed of four periods, the high, the awakening, the unraveling, and finally, a crisis. The crisis period or the fourth turning is a time of transformation where the old social order collapes and is rebuilt through great upheaval. We are in the fourth turning and in the past it resulted in either great triumph or disaster. Either devastating system collapse (think WWII or great depression) or a period that ushers in societal unity and a new ‘golden age’. I fear we are headed for the former, all the signs are primarily because most Americans turned to a authoritarian to get us through this turning. Read ‘The Fourth Turning’.

The message that democracy will certainly be saved is dangerous cause it lulls people into a false sense of security. Democracy is in danger and it can go either way at this point, so people in the US should wake up and do something about it, instead of waiting for things to miraculously be fixed. Nothing in the world is free, least of all freedom itself, so take nothing for granted.

I foolishly had hoped that Harris would be elected because DT 1st presidency was bad. But then I realized the Democrats didn’t talk about how horrible he was. They acted like it was a regular presidential race and kept polite composure. I knew how incompetent DT was because I kept up on news. But a lot of people don’t. Or if they do it’s Fox or some other lying right wing source. I’m sorry, but Dems need to get much better at communicating real fast. Example, Obama’s original medical plan was Medicare for all. Republicans went out and totally lied about the health plan, and democrats didn’t take the time to explain and fight for the best plan. It was disappointing. I hope Dems win big in the midterms and the 2028 presidency, but the only thing you can count on is people disappointing you! If we want change we must fight for it and make our politicians fight too

Ive heard sentiments like the comments at the end of this video about how we will survive and put stronger guard rails to protect against this outcome in the future but what experts fail to put in their analysis is the weakness of mankind and how you can never weed those characteristics out of us, and how no country in the history of mankind who has had at least one civil war has always had another, especially when the faction that lost is still around and being manipulated by those for their own personal gains

In regard to the IRS case against Trump, I’ve read that the courts may be cracking down on him there as well, so the system of checks and balances may very well ensure this doesn’t happen.

Before that we had news networks like FOX and CNN that catered to specific demographics. Yes, and good riddance. I don’t like it being replaced with Trump’s level of xenophobia, mindless support of Israel, and complete incompetence. Representative Government is just a pack of lies, though, so what we really need is benevolent dictatorship. The perfect ruler would be an AI, programmed according to a new constitution, one which limits things like dissent, but which removes the ill treatment of minorities and the disadvantaged.

I hate to be a doomer but I disagree with your optimistic conclusion. When and if Democrats come back into power, instead of pushing through major, lasting reforms, they will just make the usual wishy-washy attempts, voicing concern but doing nothing, while serving the oligarchs that basically control both parties. The damage Trump has done will be lasting, and four years later a smarter Republican will come back into power and continue implementing Project 2025, capturing our government permanently. We’ll be left protesting in the streets but there will be nothing we can do about it until it gets bad enough that we have something as drastic as another revolution.

in a country that has been at war for all but 17 years of its existence, in which the forever war machine (aka Military/Spying Industrial Complex) is a massive part of the GDP, you have to question whether it’s possible to call the US a democratic country. everywhere else on the planet (even in ex-soviet dictatorships) the winner is the person who won popular vote, but that isn’t always true in the US.
in two crucial moments of recent US history, 2000 (Gore) and 2016 (Clinton), the “winner”/president lost the popular vote. what would the US look like if the “people’s choice”—government of the people, by the people, for the people—had become the president??
and how does the opposite happen in a proper democracy??

One crucial detail conventionally left out this is… the USA are the ones who setup 90% of the coup’s in Central and South America. They are the facilitators of the cruelest anti-democratic actions of the last 100 years. So, in my eyes, it is naive to think that they won’t attempt to do so on our own soil. I feel a tempered relief in saying I’ve never been so glad to be Canadian. We aren’t perfect (no one is) and we are as vulnerable as any democracy on the planet – but to witness what’s happening the US is unifying, terrifying and heartbreaking at the same time.
I’ve lived in the US and had 2/4 of my kids born in the US. It felt a bit different to me at that time in my life, but the US has never felt so foreign as it does today.
Hopefully you guys can make it through this soon.
For your sake, and for the planet, I hope you can fight back with the midterms. ❤️

The recent ICE killings in Maine is just the start of Trump’s ramp up to ELIMINATE “free and fair” elections. The Turkish people being afraid to say or write their own presidents name is crazy to me. They refuse to say his name unless they absolutely have during an exam or a reading. I know somebody who got dues by the state at AGE 15 becasue they saw a facebook post saying “jellyfish have no brain or heart, who else do you know of who doesn’t have a brain or a heart” and commented the presidents name under it. He was in and out of courtrooms for 2 whole years before they let him go with a fine and 5 years probation.

If this was currently Trumps 1st term and not his 2nd term, I think the end of Democracy would probably happen. He would have 8 whole consecutive years to install himself as an Autocrat. But because Biden was elected between Trumps 2 terms it severely put a damper on him and stopped Trumps momentum of becoming a Dictator. And Trump knows this, which is one of the reasons why I think he was so angry about losing to Biden. (Other than the fact Trump doesn’t like losing). I don’t think he has enough time left in his presidency to make his actions seem like normal everyday life. Can you imagine what 6 1/2 more years of him being the President would do to this country?

It’s not a question of promoting free and fair elections. At least that’s not the main issue. Look at Germany in 1933, Algeria in 1992 and Egypt in 2012. Look at Rome in 44 BC. This lady looks at the symptoms not the disease.
