Love this. I was lucky to be raised by amazing women and accidental magic has permeated my life. Now I was thinking about deliberate magic and this popped in.

No, you don’t create magic. You create diabetes. Nature creates magic, but you bypass it. You misslead it. Feeding is about health and pleasure. Not only pleasure.

Baking is magic you have the same ingredients but the cake my sister makes from a box or even her experimental seasalt icecream cake was amazing because we share a birthday. I had a bashing twin because my mom wanted to fit in to her size zero wedding dress while two months pregnant. My sister came in the middle of my fifth birthday. All my friends were sent home I was alone . I loaded up my presents to see the new sister at the hospital. Every present. They are for her it’s her birthday now. And she is the greatest present I ever got. She is the sam to my Dean. And I ate that experimental seasalt icecream cake. Because she made it with love spent days experimenting. I had always wanted an ice ream cake but dairy was forbidden because my mom was intorent of lactose and so we ordered pizzas with no cheese. They say smell is most associated with memory. Like I used lavander oil to study for the SATs. But I can’t get that seasalt ice cream taste outofmy mouth or that memory that makes me cry because she is the most magical person I know. Keep fighting Sammy.

Wrong, it’s not sugar, it might be excess sugar consumption, but not sugar itself. Blame the bad habit of eating too much, not the healthy reasonable enjoyment of one of the most important nutrients.

    Real Magic?

_”“I’m writing a book on magic”, I explain, and I’m asked, “Real magic?” By real magic people mean miracles, thaumaturgical acts, and supernatural powers. “No”, I answer: “Conjuring tricks, not real magic”. Real magic, in other words, refers to the magic that is not real, while the magic that is real, that can actually be done, is not real magic.”_ – philosopher Daniel C. Dennett

Investors want founders who understand the financial reality of their business. Messy data, misunderstood metrics, or waiting until you’re nearly out of cash to start fundraising can cost founders leverage, valuation, and even a term sheet.

In this episode of Build Mode, host Isabelle Johannesen sits down with Sasha Orloff, founder and CEO of Puzzle and Startup Battlefield alum, to talk about what he’s learned from building companies that have raised more than $1 billion collectively.

Sasha breaks down what investors look for during fundraising, which financial metrics founders should know by heart, and why VCs don’t expect your startup to be perfect—they expect you to understand its reality. He also shares how he nearly lost a term sheet because his data room wasn’t ready, how fundraising diligence changes as a startup grows, and why getting your financial house in order can help founders raise with more confidence and leverage.

They get into:
– What raising more than $1 billion across multiple companies taught Sasha about fundraising
– Why investors value founders who have a strong grasp of their company’s financial reality
– The financial metrics founders should know before pitching VCs
How investor expectations change from pre-seed and seed through Series A, B, and beyond
– Why revenue growth and the quality of that revenue are critical fundraising metrics
– How runway, margins, sales efficiency, and profitability factor into investor decisions
– Why waiting until you’re running out of cash can hurt your fundraising leverage
– How Sasha nearly lost a term sheet because his data room wasn’t ready
– Why financial organization and compliance can influence investor confidence and startup valuations
– What founders should have prepared for the due diligence process
– Why VCs don’t expect perfection—and why being honest about what isn’t working can make for a stronger pitch
– How Sasha’s own fundraising and finance frustrations ultimately led him to build Puzzle
– How AI could change the way startups manage accounting and understand their financial health

Space technologist Robbie Schingler cofounded a satellite company that images the whole planet every day, making visible changes on Earth. He shows how pairing that data with AI creates a “planetary intelligence” we can use to spot emerging threats we might not have seen otherwise. Now he asks: Can we close the gap between seeing a crisis coming and actually stopping it?
